Junior Jazz Camp  - Sunday May 16, 1-3 pm

Sierra Jazz Society invites young musicians interested in beginning improvisation to attend Junior Jazz Camp. Katrina Wreede, Jazz Camp Faculty member, will lead this fun workshop. Junior Jazz Camp features age appropriate musical activities with the emphasis on working together, self-expression, listening, and musical adventures. Bring your instrument.

Age range: musicians ages 8-12, any instrument or voice, all levels of ability
Location: Superintendent of Schools Offices, Nevada City
Fee: $20.00 Pre-registration required.

Jazz Elements For Strings

Workshop with Katie Wreede - Jazz string clinician and  SJS Jazz Camp Faculty
Date: Sunday May 16, 4-6 pm
Ages: Teen – Adult
Ability level: Intermediate For: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Location: NC Superintendent's offices, Nevada City Fee: $20 This unique workshop is designed for string players -- classical, folk, fiddle, celtic and rock -- who want to learn basic jazz techniques including: Creating rhythmic backgrounds melodic improvisation fun jazz string techniques Bring your instrument, a music stand, manuscript paper, pencil.

Katrina Wreede: Credited by jazz historian, Leonard Feather, as making the “only outstanding contribution to jazz on the [viola]”, Katrina was Composer in the Schools for the American Composers Forum, created and taught “Junior Composers” for Berkeley Symphony, and has conducted workshops for schools and conferences around the country, including Nevada County Music Teachers In-service.

She has also coached many youth ensembles throughout California. A former member of the Turtle Island String Quartet, ensembles including the Ahn Trio and the David Parsons Dance Group play her compositions internationally.

Wednesday Night ongoing Jazz Workshops
with Bill Douglass
For vocalists, string players and flutists

Where: Body Balance, 151 Mill Street, Grass Valley

What: This is an ongoing workshop for vocalists, string players and flutists. Bill Douglass leads the group with toning, improvising using modes, and careful instruction. The class is fun and musically satisfying.

Sierra Jazz Society presents Jazz Concert at Body Balance

REFLECTIONS, the music of Thelonius Sphere Monk

When: January, 24, 7 pm
Where: Body Balance, 151 Mill Street, Grass Valley. There is a parking lot on S. Auburn Street in back of Body Balance (the Old Union Building).
Who: Joe Berry, sax; Al Bent, trombone;  Bill Douglass, bass; Tim Metz, drums
Cost: $40 VIP (Includes front row seating and 1 drink ticket)
$20 General Admission Door $18 in advance, $5 Lotus Members (limit 1 ticket)

Join the fun! Whatever age or instrument you play, or voice –take an adventure this summer in music. Our faculties, under the leadership of Bill Douglass, all are patient, kind and great musicians. You don’t have to know how to improvise, just know your instrument well enough.

If you haven't been to Jazz Camp before, please read the prerequisites.

Vocalists please sign up early as this sectional can get filled quickly.

Work-study scholarships are available on first-come basis. Contact Julia for more information.

The public performance on the last day of camp is not mandatory but it is fun for our community to hear both the students and the faculty play.

Jazz Camp dates:
Wednesday July 21 – Sunday July 25
Venue: The Nevada City School of the Arts, Grass Valley.

Available to: All ages, instruments and voice.
